Truck AC Repair and Full-Service Diagnostics

Truck AC repair is one of the most common calls we get at Hamiltons Automotive, and it's one of the jobs where a wrong diagnosis costs you real money. A failed compressor, a refrigerant leak, or a clogged expansion valve each present similarly, blowing warm air, but they're not fixed the same way. At our shop on First Street in Novato, we run a full car diagnostic before we touch anything, so you're not paying to replace parts that don't need replacing. Call 415-898-4842 and tell us what the truck is doing. We'll get you in.

Truck repair cost varies considerably depending on what's failed, how long it's been neglected, and whether secondary damage has set in. An AC recharge is a straightforward service. A compressor replacement on a Ram 1500 or F-150 is a different scope entirely. Suspension wear, brake fade, and transmission slippage are all things that worsen the longer they run unaddressed. We handle the full range, AC, engine, brakes, shocks and struts, transmission replacement, and routine maintenance, so you're not bouncing between specialists to sort one truck. Every job is different, contact Hamiltons Automotive INC for an accurate estimate.

What We Cover

Truck Services We Handle In-House In-House

No subcontracting. Every service listed here is performed by our own technicians at 1032 First Street.

01

Truck AC Repair

We diagnose the full AC system, compressor, condenser, evaporator, expansion valve, and refrigerant charge. If your AC isn't blowing cold, we find the actual cause before recommending a repair. Check our AC not blowing cold page for more on how we approach this.

02

Engine Diagnostics and Repair

Check engine light, rough idle, misfires, oil consumption, we run multi-system scans and interpret the data. Diagnostic readouts tell you fault codes, not root causes. That interpretation is the job, and it's where shortcuts get expensive.

03

Brake Inspection and Replacement

Trucks carry load, and brakes wear faster under load than most owners expect. We inspect pads, rotors, calipers, and brake fluid condition. If you're hearing grinding or the pedal's going soft, don't wait on it. See our brake repair Novato page for what to expect.

04

Transmission Service and Rebuild

Slipping gears, hard shifts, delayed engagement. These are the early signals most people ignore until the transmission stops cooperating entirely. We handle full transmission replacement and repair in-house, including fluid service and diagnostic scanning.

05

Suspension and Alignment

Trucks take more punishment from road surface and load than passenger cars. Worn shocks, failing struts, and bent tie rods are common. We handle suspension repair and send you for a proper alignment when the geometry needs correction.

06

Oil Change and Scheduled Maintenance

Manufacturer intervals exist for a reason, and trucks running synthetic oil aren't exempt. We handle oil change and filter service along with 30k, 60k, 90k, and 120k mile intervals, filters, fluids, belts, and the full inspection that goes with each.

Our Process

How We Diagnose Truck Problems

  1. 01

    You Describe the Symptom

Tell us exactly what the truck is doing, when it started, under what conditions, any sounds or smells. This narrows the field before we connect a scanner.

  2. 02

    We Run a Full Diagnostic

We scan all accessible modules, not just the engine. ABS, transmission, HVAC, and chassis systems each log fault data. One scan, full picture.

  3. 03

We Give You a Clear Estimate

You get a straight explanation of what's wrong, what the repair involves, and what it'll take to fix it properly. No pressure, no inflated parts list.

My oil change light came on as I was driving to a client meeting in Novato. I stopped by Hamiltons Automotive after talking to Leo, the owner, on the phone. The team was helpful and even recommended a tire realignment. They got me out of there quickly and provided a great service.

What Drives Truck Repair Costs Up

Knowing these factors tells you why two trucks with the same symptom can have very different repair bills.

  1. 01

    How Long the Problem Ran

A refrigerant leak caught early is a seal and a recharge. The same leak ignored for a season can seize a compressor. Secondary damage always costs more than the original failure.

  2. 02

    Vehicle Make and Model

Parts availability, labor access, and engineering vary significantly between a Ram 1500, an F-250, and a Tacoma. Some trucks are straightforward to work on. Others aren't.

  3. 03

    Whether Multiple Systems Are Involved

A hard shift complaint can be a transmission issue, a sensor fault, or a software calibration. Isolating the real cause takes time. Guessing costs more.

  4. 04

    Maintenance History

A truck that's been on schedule, oil, filters, fluid changes, typically responds faster to repair. Deferred maintenance adds complexity and sometimes extends labor time considerably.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my truck's AC compressor is failing or if it just needs a refrigerant recharge?
A recharge fixes low refrigerant. A failed compressor won't hold pressure regardless of how much refrigerant is added, and you'll often hear a rattling or grinding noise from the front of the engine when the AC clutch engages. We pressure-test the system and inspect compressor engagement before recommending any parts. A recharge on a bad compressor is money wasted.
Are trucks more expensive to repair than passenger cars?
Often, yes. Trucks typically run heavier-duty components, which cost more to source. Labor access varies, some engines sit in engine bays that make straightforward jobs considerably harder. Diesel trucks add another layer: injectors, turbos, and DEF systems are specialized work. That said, a routine brake job or oil change on a half-ton pickup isn't dramatically different from a sedan.
What is the most expensive repair on a truck?
Engine replacement and transmission rebuilds are consistently the highest-cost repairs. Full engine replacement on a truck can run deep depending on the make and whether a remanufactured or new unit is used. Transmission rebuilds are similarly significant. The best way to avoid either is catching the early symptoms, slipping gears, burning smell, overheating, before they escalate to full failure.
My Ram 1500 shifts hard between first and second gear. Is that a transmission issue?
Hard shifts between first and second are a common complaint on Ram 1500s and can point to a transmission solenoid fault, low fluid, contaminated fluid, or in some cases a software calibration issue. We scan the transmission module for fault codes first. Guessing on a transmission repair without diagnostic data is an expensive way to not fix the problem.
How often should a truck get a full inspection if it's used for towing or hauling regularly?
More often than the standard interval. Towing accelerates brake wear, transmission heat cycling, and suspension fatigue. If your truck regularly pulls a trailer or carries significant load, brakes and suspension should be inspected at least annually, and transmission fluid should be changed more frequently than the standard interval. We'll tell you what the manufacturer recommends for your specific use case.
Can you diagnose a check engine light on a truck that's throwing multiple codes?
Yes. Multiple fault codes usually indicate one root cause that triggered a cascade of secondary codes, or genuine failures in more than one system. We read all accessible modules and interpret the pattern rather than clearing codes and waiting for them to return. That distinction matters. It's the difference between fixing the truck and temporarily silencing it.
